Israel’s Mediterranean Diet has long been considered the World’s Healthiest Diet and new data from Bloomberg and the Lancet has backed that claim up.
Why adopt the Israeli-style Mediterranean Diet? First, it’s delicious! Second, it’s incredibly diverse with something to suit everyone – from the pickiest of eaters to those who eat it all! And third? Well, it’s the healthiest diet in the world!
Two new studies published recently have confirmed what has long been suspected by food and diet experts: The Mediterranean Diet, specifically the Israeli version, is the healthiest in the world. So what makes the Israeli Mediterranean Diet so healthy? A routine rich in olive oil, healthy nuts and fresh vegetables, along with seeds, seafood, fiber and vegetables. The first study, published in The Lancet found that Israel has the lowest rate of diet-related deaths. Director of the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Dr Christopher Murray, has found that Israel has the world’s healthiest diet in the study ‘Global Burden of Disease.’ “This study affirms what many have thought for several years – that poor diet is responsible for more deaths than any other risk factor in the world. While sodium, sugar, and fat have been the focus of policy debates over the past two decades, our assessment suggests the leading dietary risk factors are high intake of sodium, or low intake of healthy foods, such as whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds, and vegetables. The paper also highlights the need for comprehensive interventions to promote the production, distribution, and consumption of healthy foods across all nations,” wrote Dr. Murray.
The countries with the lowest rates of diet-related deaths were Israel (89 deaths per 100,000 people), France, Spain, Japan, and Andorra. For comparison’s sake, the UK ranked 23rd (127 deaths per 100,000) above Ireland (24th) and Sweden (25th), and the US ranked 43rd (171 deaths per 100,000) after Rwanda and Nigeria (41st and 42nd), China ranked 140th (350 deaths per 100,000 people), and India 118th (310 deaths per 100,000 people). The countries with the highest rates of diet-related deaths were Uzbekistan (892 deaths per 100,000 people), Afghanistan, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu.” The second study, published by Bloomberg, found Mediterranean countries dominate the list of healthiest countries, when taking into account diet plus lifestyle, including health factors like access to clean water, smoking, exercise, obesity and diet. Alongside Israel in the healthiest-diet category are Spain, Italy, France and other northern Mediterranean countries.
